I am not a professional just documenting how i repaired the hot water heater s pilot light to stay on.
Water heater pilot won t stay lit not thermocouple.
The water heater pilot light is a small flame that ignites the gas burner on your water heater.
If you have a natural or propane gas water heater chances are the pilot has gone out.
This equipment is the core reason why your water heater functions it also knows if the pilot light is on or off through an electric current that draws power from the pilot s heat.
The pilot lights but won t stay lit if a water heater pilot won t light at all the thermocouple probably isn t the problem.
Ge smartwater gas hot water heater replaced thermocoupler and the pilot will stay lit for a while but when the burner kicks on it only stays on for a minute and acts like the gas is shut off read more.
Another possible reason why a pilot won t stay lit has to do with the flex tubing.
The procedure for lighting a standing pilot always includes lighting the flame then manually holding in the gas valve to keep the flame burning and give the thermocouple time to heat up.
If this is the problem then unkinking the tube will occasionally resolve the issue.
Sometimes this tubing will get kinked in places which will prevent proper operation.
This is also a likely cause if the pilot won t ignite at all.
When the water heater pilot light goes out first try relighting it following the directions on the water heater label.
As a result the pilot doesn t get enough fuel to stay lit.
This tubing connects to the gas controller and will ensure a steady stream of gas.
Dirt and debris can collect in the pilot tube causing the flow of gas to be blocked.
Most recently manufactured water heaters function with the aid of a thermocouple.
Thankfully a dirty pilot tube is the easiest issue to fix.
