For optimum water softener performance you should be sure to keep your salt level above the water level which is usually about one quarter full but do not overfill it. The content is usually 6 to 10 inches or 3 to 6 gallons. The water level or briny water or brine level in a water softener brine tank may be abnormally high or it may simply fail to drop when the water softener goes through a regeneration cycle.

If you are having issues with a frozen drain line then the tank will be half full with water which is not a good sign.
